Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio confirmed that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The multi-platform release will include crossplay and additional content beyond what’s available on PC. No exact release date was given.
The highly requested multi-platform version adds crossplay and rollback netcode
The announcement came during the Virtua Fighter Direct 2025 Spring livestream. Seiji Aoki, the series’ legacy producer, acknowledged fan demand for multiplatform support. Since the game’s release on Steam, players have asked for crossplay and console versions. Sega listened.
“We want to give users on all platforms the opportunity to enjoy Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.,” Aoki said. “This won’t be just a simple port. We’ll share more about the additional content soon.”
Crucially, the crossplay feature will use the same rollback netcode that stabilizes online matches on the PC version. This should make online fights smoother across all consoles, a must for a technical fighter like Virtua Fighter.
A global tournament with $100,000 prize pool will launch alongside the new versions
In a move that might reignite the competitive scene, Sega also announced the Virtua Fighter Open Championship. This will be the first official global tournament for the series, with online and offline qualifiers in North America, Europe, Asia, and Japan.
The grand prize is $100,000. Details on the schedule and eligibility are still forthcoming, but the scale of this event shows Sega’s renewed commitment to the fighting game community.
New character models and cinematic upgrades bring R.E.V.O. in line with next-gen standards
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio—best known for the Yakuza series—has been handling development. Their work on R.E.V.O. includes fresh character models, upgraded stages, and improved cinematics. The game runs at 4K and 60 FPS on all next-gen consoles.
These visual enhancements give the 15-year-old engine a modern polish without sacrificing the tight, frame-precise gameplay that defines Virtua Fighter.
Teaser for new Virtua Fighter project includes returning character Wolf Hawkfield
During the broadcast, Sega teased a new Virtua Fighter project. Wolf Hawkfield, the wrestling-turned-fighter, will return. The team promised deeper character backstories and motivations—something that was always minimal in past games.
“We want players to understand who the characters really are,” said producer Riichiro Yamada. “Even for legacy fighters like Wolf, we’re exploring what drives them now.”
There’s no word yet if this new project is Virtua Fighter 6 or something else entirely, but the timing of the reveal has fueled speculation that more news is coming soon.
What this means for the future of Virtua Fighter and Sega’s next-gen strategy
This multi-platform push and the crossplay integration suggest Sega is positioning Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. as more than just a stopgap. With the global tournament and new content on the horizon, R.E.V.O. could become the series’ bridge to whatever comes next.
Whether that's a full-fledged Virtua Fighter 6 or a new type of project remains to be seen. But for now, the fighting game community has a lot to look forward to on their PS5s and beyond.
