Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are proving that a decade together doesn’t have to lose its spark. With Shelton’s new album For Recreational Use Only dropping May 9, the couple is giving fans more than one reason to celebrate — including two duets recorded together, though only one makes the cut this time around.

Couple chemistry led to two studio duets, but only one is out now

“Hangin’ On” is the official duet Stefani and Shelton released on the country star’s latest album. But in an exclusive interview with People, Shelton revealed that the pair actually recorded a second track during the same sessions. The two were so excited about both songs that they decided to save one for a future project.

“We were both so fired up about both of them that we ended up holding one back,” Shelton said. And fans who loved hearing them bounce off each other on The Voice won’t be disappointed — these tracks were made with the same energy that fueled their iconic coaching chemistry.

Recording together as a couple means Stefani and Shelton take their time

Their process is as natural as their relationship. Shelton explained that they often rehearse at home before hitting the studio. “We live together, so we walk around the house singing these songs all the time,” he said. “By the time we get to the studio, we’re normally really prepared.”

But “Hangin’ On” wasn’t an easy one. Shelton admitted the song was “definitely a challenge” to record, noting that they both like to push their vocal limits. It’s clear they’re not just coasting on fame — they’re still striving to stretch their artistic muscles.

Gwen Stefani’s lyric standards show her artistic evolution

Stefani’s attention to lyrics remains sharp, even after decades in the music business. Shelton joked about their different approaches, saying he’s not always as picky as she is. “It’s really important for her to be able to see herself in the lyric that she’s singing versus me,” he explained.

He even made a funny note about his own flexibility: “I’ve sung about going to prison, and there’s never really been a debate.” But with Stefani, it’s about authenticity — something she’s never sacrificed, whether in No Doubt or her solo career.

Their 10-year relationship still feels “exciting and new”

As Stefani and Shelton approach their tenth anniversary, Shelton reflected on how quickly time has passed. “Some of the things that we talk about, we’re to the point in our relationship that it’s like, ‘Oh, remember what happened…’ and you realize, ‘Oh my God, that was 8 years ago!’” he said.

But despite the years, he says the relationship “still feels new” to him. In fact, he believes that’s the key to happiness. “I feel like that might be the key to happiness — is that it feels just as exciting and new and happy,” Shelton added.

They’re embracing a spontaneous summer with no rigid plans

With summer on the horizon, Shelton is looking forward to unwinding with Stefani and the kids — Kingston, 18, Zuma, 16, and Apollo, 11. The couple doesn’t have any strict plans, and that’s by design. “We both have a few shows here and there, but nothing that’s tying us down to keep us from going and doing something fun,” he said. “We don’t have any plans — which is our favorite plan.”

It’s a simple but telling glimpse into how they live — freely, supportively, and without the pressure to constantly perform, even though they have the tools to do so.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are still each other’s biggest fans

Recently, Stefani shared a heartfelt video on social media celebrating Shelton’s 30th No. 1 single with “Texas.” The montage of date nights, family moments, and playful dances shows a couple that's not just in love, but deeply comfortable with one another.

They’ve grown together, created together, and clearly still enjoy being together. And with two more songs in the vault, their creative partnership isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

For Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, the next decade might just be as inspired — and as spontaneous — as the last.
