Get ready for a big change in the dinosaur movie world because Jurassic World Rebirth is on its way. This movie, the fourth in the Jurassic World series and the seventh overall in the whole Jurassic Park story, is coming out three years after the last one. Just like its title suggests, it is a new start for the series. It has a completely new group of people, and from what we have seen, it seems to be fixing some things the earlier Jurassic World Movies missed.

From the early trailers, it looks like Jurassic World Rebirth will be pretty scary. Scenes showing characters being chased by a Mosasaurus on a boat or hanging from a cliff while fighting a Quetzalcoatlus will probably make everyone jump. Plus, the new hybrid dinosaur, the D-rex, sounds like it might be the scariest creature the movies have shown us yet. While there will be many dinosaurs in Jurassic World Rebirth, it is impossible to forget about the Tyrannosaurus rex. The T-rex was the most feared dinosaur in the first Jurassic Park movie. It is almost always a requirement for it to be in every movie in the series. So, it is not a surprise when some of the characters in Jurassic World Rebirth get attacked by a T-rex. But one part of the movie shows a T-rex swimming. This is not something we see very often.

The New Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer Hints at a Terrifying Return to Form

Getting Back to the Scary Dinosaurs and the Helpless Human Characters

One of the best things about the original Jurassic Park was how terrifying it felt. The great special effects made it even scarier. Even with all the wonder of seeing dinosaurs brought back to life with computer graphics, there was a strong sense of fear about these creatures. The idea of being trapped on an island full of dinosaurs with little protection is truly frightening. The first Michael Crichton novel made this even more clear. It had some very violent and bloody deaths for human characters. But as the movie series went on, the terror and fear around dinosaurs became less intense. The attempts to bring those scary parts back later felt almost silly.

For example, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom tried to be more of a horror movie. But the film itself was too ridiculous and generally not very good. This stopped those horror parts from truly working. From what we have seen in the new trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth almost every dinosaur feels like a serious threat. This is true whether it is a T-rex or a pterosaur. This really shows that these are dangerous animals. The people on the expedition look truly helpless and at the mercy of these creatures. Thankfully they are not trying to show the wonder of dinosaurs being alive again. Instead the basic danger and threat of these creatures is back. The lack of any modern city setting helps this too. The dinosaurs are now in their own space again putting the humans in their shadow. This makes hearts pound like they have not in the series for years. It is good that the T-Rex is treated as dangerous in a way that does not just make it a monster like Godzilla. And most importantly, old memories do not seem to be a big part of the series this time.

That T-Rex Swimming Scene is Real and Scientifically Sound Too

Diving into the Science Behind the Prehistoric Predator's Surprising Abilities

Most people probably would not think T-rexes can swim. But the dinosaur has actually been shown in water in another movie in the series. A T-rex actually swims in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. That was the second movie in the franchise. But it seems like Jurassic World Rebirth will put much more focus on a T-rex’s ability to swim. Thankfully, experts say T-rexes could indeed swim in real life. That is really cool.

Experts explain in Apple TV+'s Prehistoric Planet that marks called "swim traces" have been found on T-rex fossils. Also with CT scans experts have found that T-rex bones have a hollow structure. This would have helped them float while swimming across large bodies of water. So the T-rex swimming down the river in Jurassic World Rebirth is actually very realistic. Since T-rexes are also a type of reptile called archosaurs, it makes sense that it looks like a crocodile when it swims in the new movie. This connection to real science makes the scene even more exciting for me. It is great to see the movies paying attention to these details.

Even though T-rexes could swim they probably did not do it much or for very long distances. David Attenborough points out in Prehistoric Planet that T-rexes were more vulnerable in the water. T-rexes never hunted in the water. They only swam to get to different islands. The ocean was the main hunting ground for the Mosasaurus. The Mosasaurus is another dinosaur that will be seen in Jurassic World Rebirth. Since T-rexes could easily be killed by a Mosasaurus while swimming in the ocean, they likely tried to avoid it. A T-rex and a Mosasaurus will both be in Jurassic World Rebirth. But it would be surprising if the two dinosaurs fought in the film. The T-rex is only seen swimming in a narrow river in the trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth. The Mosasaurus probably could not even fit in this river. So the T-rex will likely be safe from the much bigger dinosaur during this particular part of the movie.

Jurassic World Rebirth Looks to Fix Past Franchise Missteps by Changing Things Up

Saying Goodbye to Old Faces and Leaning into New Scary Storytelling

One big difference between Jurassic World Rebirth and the earlier movies is that it has no characters from before. This movie is not trying to bring back old actors from the first two series of films. This means no Owen and Claire from the first three Jurassic World movies. And no Alan Grant from the original Jurassic Park. That was somewhat true for the first Jurassic World. But it did bring back Henry Wu from the first Jurassic Park in a much bigger role. Wu continued to have a bigger presence in the next two movies. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also brought back Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm. Finally Malcolm and Wu were joined by Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler and Sam Neil’s Alan Grant in Jurassic World Dominion. That last movie was driven mostly by old memories. This hurt the story. It resulted in a forced meeting between the characters. The whole movie built up to this. This showed where these films went wrong.

The earlier Jurassic World movies often felt forgettable. They did not have much interesting on their own. They needed to bring in classic characters or copy scenes from the first Jurassic Park. This made them feel like average blockbusters in the worst way. They got worse in quality as they went along. This is probably why Jurassic World Dominion struggled to make a billion dollars. A better movie would have reached that amount easily. By not having these older characters, especially since they are not all over the movie's marketing, Jurassic World Rebirth will have to stand on its own. While the first Jurassic World mostly did the same, it was also the first movie in the series in over ten years. That was its own selling point because people loved the original 1993 film so much. Thankfully, by making it clear that this movie is not made in the same old way, the newest film might be the sequel that the original Jurassic Park always should have been.

Even though it does not seem to be directly copying old scenes, the newest Jurassic World movie might take some ideas from the most debated Jurassic Park sequel. The new trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth feels a bit like Jurassic Park III. There is a scene where a dinosaur egg is stolen. This makes the parent, a winged pterosaur, angry. This whole part seems to be a new version of two of the best moments from Jurassic Park III. These were the well-known "bird cage" scene with the pterodactyls, which was actually based on a scene from Crichton's Jurassic Park novel. Also, this scene ends with a character named Billy seemingly giving himself up because he had stolen raptor eggs. By putting parts of these ideas together in a new way, the movie, which is not focused on old memories, shows how to use familiar elements in a fresh way.
